De server-versie krijgt hem wel mee voor communicatie tussen cpu’s. Om nu te communiceren tussen de chipset en de cpu is een 2e generatie dmi aangebracht. Deze kan met 20 GT/s communiceren (4x 5GT/s ( 4 x pci-express)) voor communicatie tussen de pch (platform controller hub) accu HP ProBook 4510sen de cpu. Dat is een stuk meer dan bij bijvoorbeeld P67 en Z67 waarbij de dmi tot 5GT/s gaat.

Tevens is – net als bij Sandy Bridge – de pci-express controller verplaatst van de chipset naar de cpu. (De X79-chipset heeft dus géén pci-express controller meer). Dat is een grote verandering, maar dat het effect heeft, heeft Sandy Bridge al bewezen. Fujitsu LifeBook S7010 accu In de nieuwe Sandy Bridge E-lijn zijn maar liefst 40 pci-express datalijnen in de cpu onder gebracht. Een stuk meer dan bij bijvoorbeeld de i7 2600K, die er 16 heeft.
